Though you can purchase cannabutter from the market where cannabis is legal, many people choose to make their own.

To properly make cannabutter, follow these steps:

1.      Decarboxylation:

It is crucial to decarboxylate the cannabis before making butter.

In its raw form cannabis contain the inactive forms of THC and CBD – the tetrahydrocannabinolic acid (THCA) and cannabidiolic acid (CBDA). By heating these compounds, they undergo decarbing to become the active compounds THC and CBD.

If you are using fresh cannabis to make cannabutter, you may need to let it cook for up to 1 hour. Conversely, if you use drier and older cannabis, you can heat it for around 20 minutes. When heating, be sure to stir it after every 10 minutes. After some time, its color changes from bright green to dark brown-green, which shows the complete decarboxylation.

Furthermore, make sure your oven does not exceed 240°F as it can destroy the terpene profile. These compounds are essential to impart aroma and flavor to the plants.

2.      Stovetop Cooking:

Once the decarboxylation has been completed, you need the following:

  • 1/2 ounce (14 grams) decarboxylated cannabis
  • 2 cups (500 ml) of water
  • 2 sticks of butter (approximately 8 ounces or 225 grams)
  • 1 medium-sized saucepan with a lid
  • 1 wooden spoon
  • 2 cheese cloths
  • 1 medium-sized glass bowl or container

When the water starts boiling, add butter to it. After melting of butter, add the cannabis mixture to it and allow it to simmer for 3-4 hours. Be sure to stir the mixture every 20-30 minutes to avoid burning.

Once you have done cooking, place two cheesecloths over a glass bowl or container, pour the mixture and allow the liquid to drain through.

Let the remaining liquid cool at room temperature and place the bowl in the refrigerator until the butter has completely separated from the water.

Now carefully sparse the butter in a separated container. You can store it in a refrigerator for immediate or short-term use. Moreover, it can be kept in an airtight container in the freezer for up to 6 months. When making cannabis edibles at home, it is best to use cannabutter and half regular butter.

Safety & Side Effects:

Though cannabutter is safe to eat, you should consider some side effects. Unlike smoking or vaping, finding an appropriate dosage for edible cannabis products can be difficult due to varying concentrations of THC.

Furthermore, the edibles have a longer latency time due to different metabolization processes. However, some common side effects of cannabis include:

  • Dry mouth
  • Sleepiness
  • Paranoia
  • Impaired motor control
  • Altered senses

Using cannabutter does not come without risks. It is difficult to know the exact concentration of THC in your product, making it easier to overconsume.

The Bottom Line:

Cannabutter comes from the combination of cannabis and butter.

People are using cannabutter as an edible and infusing it to make delicious recipes. The therapeutic values of cannabis help people to manage cancer-related symptoms and improve sleep. Additionally, it can improve overall health and wellness. So, if you are interested in using cannabis-infused butter, you can purchase it and make it at home.
